Formation of Rhombohedral Crystallite in Platelet Graphite Nanofibers

چکیده
Graphite crystallizes in both hexagonal (2H) and rhombohedral (3R) systems. It is known that the 3R modification in graphite occurs locally by grinding of 2H crystal, and disappears by annealing at high temperature or decomposition of its intercalation compounds [Boehm 1955]. It was reported that the 3R phase content in artificial graphite, which was estimated from the integrated intensities of X-ray powder patterns, was increased by increasing the grinding time using ball-mill and saturated ca. 30% even at prolonged period [Inagaki 1973]. These observations suggest that the 3R stacking of carbon layers is meta-stable phase. Recently, the 3R modification in graphite has attracted attention as the cathode material for the Li-ion battery and as an intermediate for the cubic-diamond formation from graphite [Flandrois 1996, Guerin 1999, Yang 2001]. In this study, we found that the graphite nanofibers (GNFs) with high content of 3R phase could be synthesized by CVD method from CO/H2 mixture with Fe ultra fine particles as a catalyst. The stability of 3R phase in GNFs was also examined.

X-ray peak broadening analysis in LaMnO3+δ nano-particles with rhombohedral crystal structure
In this work, structural and magnetic properties of LaMnO3+δ compound prepared by citrate precursor method and annealed in presence of oxygen are investigated. The structural characterization of LaMnO3+δ by X-ray powder diffraction and using X’pert package and Fullprof program is evidence for a rhombohedral structure (R-3c space group) confirmed by FTIR measurement. The magnetic measurements sh...

متن کاملIncomplete wetting of methane on graphite at low temperatures
The wetting behaviour of methane on graphite has been studied by means of low energy electron diffraction and reflection high energy electron diffraction in the temperature range 14-40 K. Incomplete wetting, or crystallite formation, is detected over the entire temperature range for films with thicknesses of 15 or more layers. Isosteric heats of adsorption are reported for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th ...
متن کاملFirst-principles calculation of highly asymmetric structure in scanning-tunneling-microscopy images of graphite.
Using a first-principles calculation, we have computed the charge density for states near EF that is related to the current density observable in scanning-tunneling-microscopy experiments for surfaces of hexagonal, rhombohedral, and a model stage-l intercalated graphite. In hexagonal and rhombohedral graphite, the tunneling current is predicted to be considerably smaller at surface atomic sites...
متن کاملRemoval of Metallic and Organic Contaminants from Aqueous Streams by Novel Filtration Methods
Graphite nanofibers, are a novel material that has been developed in our laboratory from the metal catalyzed decomposition of certain hydrocarbons (1). These structures possess a cross-sectional area that varies between 5 to 100 nm and have lengths ranging from 5 to 100 mm (2). High-resolution transmission electron microscopy studies have revealed that the nanofibers consist of extremely well-o...
